She’s 12 years old and going into the 7th grade.  She lives with her parents, John and Cherie and her older brother Michael.

Rachel is a big Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus fan and she likes horses.  She really enjoyed the wild rides in Disneyland and Universal Studios when she went to California in June.  Her favorite color is red and she likes to eat candy and spend time with her friends.

Rachel had been suffering through headaches for the past few months, and recently they increased in frequency and severity.  Sunday morning, July 20, 2008, she was in such pain, the family quickly made their way to Children’s.

Through a CT Scan doctors discovered a large mass between the base of Rachel’s skull and the top of her spine. This mass/tumor was blocking the drainage of the fluid in her brain which was the cause of the severe headaches.

The neurosurgery team operated Sunday afternoon to insert a catheter and drain the fluid, relieving the pressure on her optic nerves. All went extremely well and the head surgeon believes the tumor is benign.

On Tuesday evening, July 22, 2008, an emergency surgery was done to remove the pomegranate size tumor, it was a success.
